Ask anyone in Collin County where to take out-of-town visitors and you’ll hear the same answer: the square. Downtown McKinney has spent a century and a half becoming the kind of place other developments try to imitate — and for anyone planning a wedding or event in Dallas–Fort Worth, that authenticity is a superpower. Here’s why we bet our venue on it.

The atmosphere is real, and guests can tell

Plenty of DFW venues manufacture charm: reclaimed wood shipped in, Edison bulbs strung over a parking lot. Downtown McKinney doesn’t have to. The brick storefronts around the square have been standing since the era when McKinney became the seat of Collin County; the streets are walkable because they were built for walking; the courthouse anchors the district the way it has for generations.

Guests feel the difference immediately. An event in a genuine historic district doesn’t start when the doors open — it starts when people park, walk past shop windows and restaurant patios, and arrive already charmed.

Everything is walkable — which changes your event

Hosting in a walkable district quietly solves half a planner’s problems:

Before the event: early guests aren’t sitting in their cars — they’re having coffee or a cocktail within a block or two.
After the event: the night doesn’t end at send-off. Guests spill into a downtown that’s still awake, and the celebration gets an epilogue.

The photography argument

Photographers love downtown McKinney for the same reason couples do: texture. Historic brick, painted signage, string lights, the courthouse silhouette — golden-hour portraits here need no styling. From a second-story balcony, that scenery becomes your event’s backdrop; at dusk, when the string lights come on across the streets below, it becomes the photo everyone posts.

That view — over the rooftops rather than at street level — is honestly the thing that made Ben and me build The Chestnut Hall where we did. Some perspectives can’t be rented at ground level.

It’s easier to reach than people assume

Downtown McKinney sits just off US-75, roughly 30 miles north of downtown Dallas — closer than out-of-state guests expect and an easy drive from Plano, Frisco, Allen, and Prosper. Public parking garages serve the district (put the garage address on your invitation — it’s the one logistical tip that matters), and hotel options range from boutique stays near the square to national brands minutes away on 75.

The calendar is alive

McKinney’s downtown runs a full slate of markets, festivals, and seasonal celebrations through the year. For event hosts this cuts both ways, so plan with it:

Use it: a festival or holiday weekend means downtown arrives pre-decorated and buzzing — December events here feel like they hired a set designer.
Plan around it: big festival days bring crowds and occasional street closures. Check the city’s event calendar before locking your date, and warn vendors about load-in timing.

What it means for your event, practically

Your décor budget goes further. The setting does heavy lifting a ballroom makes you pay for.
Your guests get an experience, not just an event. Especially valuable when half your list is traveling.
Your photos date beautifully. Historic districts don’t go out of style; hotel carpets do.
Your logistics need three sentences — garage address, hotel suggestion, walking note — and then they’re done.

Our obviously biased conclusion

We built our venue one story above this district because we think downtown McKinney is the best event setting in North Texas — and then we added the view of it.
